A Love Letter to Wrestling | The Beauty of Wrestling
By: Zoey Lints
I have had the pleasure this off-season to wrestle every day. Because of this, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, and I want to express how wrestling can make a person feel. I asked wrestlers why they love wrestling, and here’s what they had to say:
“I love wrestling because it is a strategic and artistic sport. There are infinite combinations of moves to execute & you are always learning and never bored”
~Jasmine Gong
“I love wrestling because it’s not like any other sport, you build a family through bonds & connections on your team and even sometimes your opponents and you don’t get that anywhere else”
~Nevaeh Arthun
“I love wrestling because there is an unspoken respect and compassion that wrestlers have for each other just through the shared experience of enduring the sport itself. Wrestling not only builds muscle and agility, it also builds confidence, character, and strong relationships with other athletes.”
~Love Daley
Wrestlers have immediate respect for one another because we know how hard we all work. This creates friendships like no other.
“Wrestling is my safe place and my therapy. When I’m having a bad day, I go to practice and it gets better. I have a family there, and when I’m wrestling I forget about everything else. It makes me so happy and builds my self-confidence. It builds my discipline.”
~ Bryana Hughart
I love wrestling because it makes me feel a way nothing else can. I look forward to practicing every day, and it makes my heart so happy to think about it. Off the mat, everyone thinks I’m this shy and timid girl, but on the mat, I feel like a bold and powerful woman. I love perfecting my favorite moves because I know I can always resort to them. I also love doing a variety of moves because I feel so accomplished each time I do a new one in a match. Wrestling makes me feel like I can do anything, and it brings me so much happiness.
As you can see, wrestling isn’t just a sport. Wrestling is a lifestyle, a home, and a happy place.
